Free Crochet Pattern for a Ribbed Headband


I am almost finished with this month's joy. I have been having so much fun writing crochet patterns, and here is a free pattern for you to enjoy. The freebie for today is this sweet headband, and I will release the pattern for the boot cuffs tomorrow!

  Any worsted weight yarn. The yarn used in the picture above is Hobby Lobby’s “I Love This Yarn” Approx. 220 to 270 yards (small to ex large, this includes flower)

Hook: J – 10/6.00mm

Gauge: 4x4 = 6 Cross Stitches x 10 rows in pattern of cross stitch row/SC row

Supplies (Optional):
Button of choice, for the closure at nape of your neck.  Any other buttons or crystal embellishments of choice
Pattern Notes:
1. Beginning CH 2 on boot cuff does not count as a stitch, but will recede and become a Mock BP HDC
2. Beginning CH 3  Counts as a DC during Cross Stitch Rows
3. Beginning CH 1  Counts as a SC during the SC rows

Special Stitches: Cross Stitch = Skip ST, DC in nxt ST; Cross back going in front of DC just made, and DC in skipped ST                       

Scallop = 4 DC in nxt ST      

Stitch Guide
join w/ = join with;       
 SLP ST = Slip Stitch;      
CH = Chain;      
SC = Single Crochet;
HDC = Half Double Crochet;    
DC
= Double Crochet;   
FP HDC = Front Post Half Double Crochet  
BP HDC = Back Post Half Double Crochet
SC DEC = Single  Crochet Decrease (Insert hook, pull up a loop, with remaining loops on hook, insert hook in nxt ST and pull up a loop, yarn over hook and pull through all loops on hook)         
nxt = Next;       *  * = Repeat between the stars the number of times stated;  x = Times; example Repeat 2 x or 2 times; 3 x or 3 times and so on;
in = example “in nxt st” means you will be inserting the hook under the top two loops of the next stitch, or around the post of the next stitch to complete the sequence

Gauge = 4” x 4” 7 ribs wide x 11 row height

Make foundation CH  44  46  48 (Every 2 CH’s on foundation CH will add 1” to your finished headband)

Row 1: HDC in 3rd CH from Hook, and in each remaining CH (42  44  46 HDC)

Row 2: CH 2 turn; HDC in 1st ST; *FP HDC in nxt ST; BP HDC in nxt ST* Repeat 19  20 21 x more; HDC in last ST ( 2 HDC, 20  21  22  FP HDC  20  21  22  BP HDC)

Row 3-9: Repeat Row 2 Do not end off at Row 9 (If you would like a wider headband, add more rows here)    (Tapered extensions follow)

Measurements before extensions  12.5  13.5  14.5 length / width 3” to 3.5”

Extension 1      Note:  Pull the turning CH 1 tightly to help avoid the bump on the sides of the extension
Row 1: CH 1; SC  10 x across to opposite corner; CH 1 turn

Row 2: SC in each ST across; CH 1 Turn

Row 3: SC DEC, SC in nxt st (6x); SC DEC; CH 1 Turn

Row 4: SC DEC, SC in nxt st (4x); SC DEC; CH 1 Turn

Row 5: SC DEC, SC in nxt st (2x); SC DEC; CH 1 Turn

Row 6: SC DEC (2x) end off.  Complete second extension


Extension 2 (this extension has a button loop at the end)

Row 1: Attach yarn at corner, CH 1; SC  10 x across to opposite corner; CH 1 turn

Row 2: SC in each ST across; CH 1 Turn

Row 3: SC DEC, SC in nxt st (6x); SC DEC; CH 1 Turn

Row 4: SC DEC, SC in nxt st (4x); SC DEC; CH 1 Turn

Row 5: SC DEC, SC in nxt st (2x); SC DEC; CH 1 Turn

Row 6: SC DEC; CH 3; SC DEC;  Do not end off, as you will continue with edging, CH 1 and continue to edging base.

Edging Base
SC around entire Headband, smoothing out the rough or bumpy edges on the extensions, and executing 3 SC in the button loop, Join w/ SLP ST to beginning SC, then proceed with edging of your choice.

Simple Ripple edging 1
CH1, SLP ST in nxt ST, Complete around the entire edge of Headband. end off and weave in ends.


Scalloped edging 2      (See  Special Stitches for Scallop stitch)
CH 1, Continue to SC  down the extension until you reach the ribbed section of headband. When you reach the ribbed section  
*Skip ST; Scallop, Skip ST, SC* Repeat between *  * until you reach the opposite extension, then continue to SC around the extension until you reach the opposite side of the ribbed section continue

*Skip ST; Scallop, Skip ST, SC* Repeat between *  * until you reach the first extension, continue to SC until you reach the peak, or starting point, end off and weave in ends.

Finished Measurements
17.5  18.5  19.5  Stretched 21  22  23  

Width measurements                                4.5” = ripple edge             5” – 5.5” = scalloped edge

Triple Rose Flower           

If you want a simple flower, end off after Round 2.

CH 3, join in circle or use magic ring

Rnd. 1: CH 1; *SC in ring, CH 4* repeat 4 x more; join w/SLP ST in 1st SC (5 arches)

Rnd. 2: Holding flower facing you, in 1st CH 4 arch and in each arch; (SC, HDC, DC (3x), HDC, SC); join w/SLP ST in beg. SC

Rnd. 3: ch2, take CH behind petals, working behind petals SC around the post of SC, or the base of the arches, (CH 4, SC around the post of nxt SC) repeat sequence around, join w/SLP ST to beg. SC (5 arches)

Rnd.4: CH 1; (SC, HDC, 2 DC, 2 TRBL, 2 DC , HDC, SC) in each CH 4 arch, join w/SLP ST to top of SC, in first petal

Rnd.5: CH 2, take this chain behind last row of petals, SC around post of SC or base of beginning arches,
(CH 5, SC around the post of nxt SC) repeat sequence around; join w/SLP ST to beg. SC (5 arches)

Rnd.6: CH 1; (SC, HDC, DC, CH 1, TRBL (4x), CH1, DC, HDC, SC)
in each CH 5 loop; join w/SLP ST to top of SC, in first petal. End off and pull threads to the back tie securely, and leave tail to sew onto the headband positioned so it will be above your eyebrow.
